Bombay HC protects Ananya Panday’s personality rights, orders takedown of objectionable AI-generated content

Over the past few years, many Bollywood personalities, including Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Karan Johar, Nagarjuna, Arijit Singh and Kumar Sanu, have turned to the courts to protect their personality rights. Their petitions target the unauthorised use of their names, photographs, voices and other identifying features, AI-generated content included. Ananya Panday joined the list when she sought similar protection, claiming that multiple businesses were promoting their products with her pictures and AI-made content without her consent. The Bombay High Court has now given her relief.

Bombay HC orders takedown of content violating Ananya Panday’s privacy

According to Live Law India, the Bombay High Court has directed the takedown of objectionable content that infringes on Ananya Panday’s right to privacy. The actress had reportedly moved the court to safeguard her personality rights, alleging that various products and businesses were using her photographs, as well as AI-generated images and videos, without her consent. While passing an ad-interim order, Justice Madhav Jamdar observed that the content seemed to infringe upon Panday’s rights to privacy, publicity and moral protection, as well as her right to live with dignity. The Delhi High Court recently granted actress Kriti Sanon partial interim relief against sexually explicit deepfakes, manipulated images, fake accounts impersonating her and AI chatbots posing as her. The court, however, stopped short of imposing a blanket restriction, observing that personality rights cannot be treated as a single, unified legal claim.

Delhi HC order on Kriti Sanon limited to specific URLs and content

Dated October 29, 2026, the order from Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav narrowed the protection to certain URLs and particular kinds of content. Platforms must remove the links named in the case, and the authorities were instructed to block specific websites. The remaining defendants were barred from sharing fake or explicit material, and platforms were given three weeks to hand over user details and IP records.Even so, the court stressed that the order does not extend to news coverage, reviews, criticism, satire, parody or content made by fans.
