Jennifer Lopez’s early career transition from the Bronx to Hollywood involved a period of sacrifice that she later described as being technically homeless. The singer and actress came from a middle-class background and worked her way up in the industry step by step; however, there was a brief time period when she had to stay in a dance studio to make ends meet.

Jennifer Lopez once stayed in a dance studio

During one of her old interviews with W Magazine, the singer opened up about how she faced homelessness at one point in her life when she was 18 years old. She shared, “I was homeless before I got famous. I was homeless.” She added that she and her mother fought about her future a lot and that her mother did not really support her decision to pursue the entertainment industry. While Lopez wanted to dance, her mother wanted her to go to college and get an education. The two fought too much to the point where Lopez revealed during the interview that she had to move out of her home. “My mom and I butted heads. I didn’t want to go to college—I wanted to try dance full-time. So she and I had a break,” she shared. Lopez added, “I told her, ‘This is what I have to do.'”

Unable to stay at her parents’ house and lacking the funds to rent a place in New York City, Lopez often slept on the sofa in her Manhattan dance studio. During the day, she would take intensive dance classes and go to auditions and later would return to sleep on the studio couch after hours.

Jennifer Lopez’s big break

Her IG break came within the same year and helped her rise to the top. She first landed a job dancing in Europe in a production of Golden Musicals of Broadway and later toured Japan too. When she returned home, she booked ‘In Living Color’ and became one of the Fly Girls. However, this resulted in her leaving NYC for Los Angeles.

Jennifer Lopez credits her parents for her success

Despite the differences between her and her mother, Lopez still credited her parents as the reason why she worked so hard and actually made it in the industry. During the interview she opened up about how hard her parents used to work to make ends meet and to make sure that she had a good life growing up, which is what she applied to her work.
