The South Indian film industry has lost a familiar name who worked behind several major productions across languages. Veteran producer George Pius Tharayil passed away at the age of 63 following health complications. His death has left actors, filmmakers and other members of the film fraternity mourning the loss of a producer who played an important role in several high-profile projects over the past two decades.

According to ANI, George Pius Tharayil died on Tuesday after suffering from health issues. His death has come as a shock to the South Indian film industry, where he had built a long career working across Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi cinema. George began his journey in 2002 as an executive producer and line producer. He was associated with ‘Mitr – My Friend,’ starring Shobana, Nasser Abdullah and Preeti Vissa, early in his career. He later took up key production responsibilities on several major films.

Over the years, George Pius Tharayil became part of several notable productions involving leading stars. He served as executive producer on Ajith Kumar’s ‘Kireedam’ and ‘Billa 2.’ He later stepped into a bigger role as a producer with ‘Papanasam,’ the Tamil remake of the Malayalam blockbuster ‘Drishyam,’ which starred Kamal Haasan in the lead. His experience in production and line management also saw him work closely on large-scale projects featuring prominent names from the Tamil and Malayalam industries. His contribution often remained behind the camera, but it was an important part of bringing these films together.

Prithviraj Sukumaran pays tribute to George Pius Tharayil

News of George Pius Tharayil’s passing prompted tributes from members of the film fraternity. Actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran remembered him on social media with a heartfelt message, writing, “Rest in peace, George Etta.” His mortal remains have been kept at his residence, where friends, colleagues and members of the industry have been arriving to pay their respects. Several film personalities have also offered floral tributes as they remember his contribution to cinema. George Pius Tharayil is scheduled to be laid to rest on October 8, bringing an end to the journey of a producer whose work quietly supported some of South Indian cinema’s prominent films.
